
Fixing the “Broken Pipe” Headache in Sidel SBO 20 Series 1 Systems
If you’re running SIG Blomax or Sidel SBO lines, you know the frustration of a tube failure. One minute everything is humming along, and the next, you’ve got a “broken pipe” and a line that’s gone dead. Usually, this happens because the lamps just can’t handle the constant stress and vibration of a high-speed run. We got tired of seeing that happen, so we rebuilt our replacement lamps for the SBO 20 Series 1 to actually hold up under pressure. The Heat Balance Getting the PET preform to that perfect glass transition temperature is a bit of a balancing act. Too little heat and you’ve got problems; too much, and you’re scorching the plastic. We use high-purity quartz glass because it handles those rapid heat spikes without flinching. These lamps push out the specific short-wave infrared radiation that actually sinks into the preform wall rather than just hitting the surface. But here is a quick tip: double-check your power supply. If your voltage is even slightly off from what the lamp is rated for, you’re just asking for the filament to burn out early. Built to Last (and Fit) We stopped using the standard thin-wall quartz. It was too fragile. Instead, we went with a reinforced structure that doesn’t snap the moment you touch it during installation. More importantly, it doesn’t shake itself to death when your production line is hitting top speed. And don’t worry about the setup. These are simple drop-in replacements. They fit your existing footprint and connectors perfectly, so you won’t be spending your afternoon rewiring the oven. We also added a specific halogen cycle. It stops the tungsten filament from evaporating too fast, which means you aren’t swapping lamps nearly as often. Real-World Advice The biggest win here is fewer line stops. Once these are in, you’ll notice the heat profile across your oven zones feels a lot more stable. One thing to keep in mind, though: high heat density is tough on your reflectors. If your reflectors are pitted or look oxidized, the lamps will still work, but you’re wasting energy. Do yourself a favor—clean your reflectors while you’re swapping the lamps. It’s the easiest way to make sure you’re getting every bit of power you’re paying for.
