Most space heaters just blast hot air everywhere. If you’re running a wood export shop, that’s a nightmare. You end up heating the entire building, which is a total waste of money—and it makes the shop floor feel like a sauna. Your crew hates it. That’s why we switched to directional infrared (IR) lamps. How it actually works Think of it like the sun. You know how you feel the heat on your skin even if there’s a cool breeze? That’s the secret. These lamps don’t bother warming up the air. Instead, they send energy straight to the wood. It’s a straight shot. The heat travels in a line, hits the wood, and stops there. The result? Your wood gets the heat it needs to dry, but the air around your workers stays breathable. Getting the setup right You can’t just throw any lamp at the wall and hope for the best. You’ve got to match the wavelength to the wood—usually shortwave or medium-wave. We use quartz envelopes because they can take the heat without cracking. Distance is everything here. Too far away and you’re barely doing anything. Too close and you’re scorching your product. I always suggest using adjustable brackets. It lets you tweak the focal point until it’s just right. The real-world trade-offs Now, this isn’t a magic wand. Since the heat is so focused, you’ll get “hot spots.” If your pieces are different thicknesses or weird shapes, some parts might dry faster than others. To fix that, we wire in a PID controller and stick some thermocouples right on the wood. It keeps the temperature steady so you aren’t guessing. One more thing: keep an eye on your power.
