
Getting Your SACMI Rotary Machines Up to Speed Faster
If you’ve spent any time around high-speed PET blowing, you know the heating phase is where things usually get sticky. It’s the bottleneck. On those SACMI rotary machines, your lamps need to hit the right temperature now. If they don’t, you’re stuck choosing between slowing down your cycle or ending up with preforms that have wonky wall thickness. That’s why we built our replacement lamps the way we did. We wanted to kill that annoying lag between flipping the switch and getting full heat. The secret is in the heat-up. Most of that “cold start” lag comes down to the filament and the glass. We used a high-density tungsten filament that gets hot in milliseconds. It’s fast. Really fast. This means you don’t have to deal with those first few uneven cycles every time you restart the machine. We also tweaked the voltage-to-wattage ratio so the lamp hits peak heat without overshooting. We used heavy-wall quartz glass because rotary movements are violent—lots of vibration and thermal shock. We also spent a lot of time on the connectors. They’re precision-machined to stay tight. If a fitting is loose, you get arcing, and your end caps burn out way too soon. A quick heads-up on the trade-offs. Here’s the thing: these lamps push a massive amount of energy into the preform in a very short window. That’s what you need for those high-frequency rhythms, but it does put a bit more pressure on your cooling blow-molds. If your chilling system is already struggling, you might notice the oven getting a bit warmer overall. One last tip: check your reflector alignment when you swap the lamps. If they’re off, you’re wasting about 15% of your heat. That forces the tube to run hotter than it needs to, which just eats away at the life of the quartz. It’s a small fix that saves you a lot of money in the long run.
